Coaching honour for Branwen
United States Track Coaches Association, following a successful track season by Tufts University.
King recently completed her 17th season as head coach of the Jumbos, who qualified as a team entrant for the NCAA Division III Championship by placing third at the 37-team New England Regional Race in November. The Jumbos, who placed sixth at their conference championship, stunned several schools at the New England Regional by taking the final berth for the national meet.
The University's cross country team also surprised everybody but themselves last fall by earning a berth in the 1999 NCAA Division III National Championships where they finished 11th out of 24 teams in Wisconsin.
As a result three members of the team earned national honours. Seniors Cindy Manning and Caitlin Murphy earned all-American recognition for their high finishes while Smith-King was named coach of the year for guiding the team to their first Nationals appearance.
