Commonwealth art contest underway
inclusion in the Royal Over-Seas League 1995 Open Exhibition, which takes place at London Over-Seas House between September 6 and 17 and at the Edinburgh College of Art from November 6-30, features more than 7,000 in cash and travel prizes, including a first prize of 3,000 and one of 1,000.
Artists must be 35 years old or younger to qualify. They can submit only one work for consideration and it must have been completed by August 1, 1994 in oil or comparable media, watercolour, drawing, mixed media, monoprint or semi-relief. Free-standing works, photographs and multiple-editioned prints will not be accepted. Works that are submitted must not exceed 153 centimetres in width (frame included) or project more than 25 centimetres.
The Royal Over-Seas League has more than 23,000 members worldwide and was founded in 1910 by Sir Evelyn Wrench, a British idealist who believed in service to humanity and worked to promote understanding between nations and communities. His League is consequently required by its Royal Charter to encourage the arts, particularly among the young people of the Commonwealth, and has been sponsoring the annual exhibition, an annual music competition and a yearly literary programme for years. Last week, National Gallery curator Ms Marlee Robinson said Gallery staff would be pleased to assist Bermuda's artists in preparing submissions. Entry forms, which must be submitted by July 19, can be obtained from the Department of Cultural Affairs, Royal Over-Seas League, Park Place, St. James' Street, London SW1A 1LR. Forms can also be acquired by calling 0171-408-0214 (Ext. 219) or faxing 0171-499-6738.
*** The National Gallery , meanwhile, is preparing for its own biennial exhibition next year.
Local artists who are interested in participating in the show should provide portfolios with slides of up to 10 works to the Gallery by February 9, 1996.
Each work, which must be available for the entire duration of the exhibition, will remain anonymous to the three-man panel of judges that is selecting exhibition pieces.
Jurying of the works will take place at the Gallery during the week of either February 19 or 26, while the exhibition itself will take place between May 3 and August 31, 1996.
Anyone who requires more information should call the Gallery at 295-9428.
*** Mrs. Mary Winchell, education co-ordinator at the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo , has reported that the recent marine presentations of US entertainer-educators Mr. and Mrs. Fish were very well-received. During the six-day visit by the Fishes -- aka Jeff and Deb Hall Sandler of Portland, Maine -- students from every primary school on the Island and some 1,500 to 1,600 visitors at the Aquarium managed to take in the couple's shows, Mrs.
Winchell told Community . The shows, which take a fun approach to marine biology issues, were sponsored by the Bank of Bermuda and Bermuda Zoological Society.
