The AAFP represents more than 88,000 family physicians, family practice residents and medical students from across the US.

It was founded in 1947 and was instrumental in establishing the medical specialty of family practice in 1969.

The AAFP also was a pioneer in establishing a requirement that its members earn 150 hours of approved continuing medical education every three years.
