Eastern parishes to kick off Island-wide clean-up effort
The environmental group Keep Bermuda Beautiful has announced plans to launch a major Island-wide clean-up next month.
Volunteers comprised of individuals, clubs and businesses will spend three consecutive weekends cleaning up east, west and central sections on the Island.
The object of the campaign -- which will kick off on September 23 in the eastern parishes -- is to address the "on-going litter problem including illegal dumping''.
KBB president Mrs. Kendaree Burgess Fairn said: "We hope to surpass last year's haul which was between nine and ten tons of garbage.'' The group will divide the clean-up into three areas to spread the workload and make the most of volunteers' time.
"By dividing the Island we feel we can concentrate our efforts and really focus on the trouble spots,'' Mrs. Burgess Fairn said.
Divers, including the Sub Aqua Club, will also be working in key locations around the Island.
KBB is also hoping that truckers will volunteer to take the bagged litter to the Tynes Bay incinerator on the North Shore.
The group will also be holding a clean-up raffle to encourage participation.
Anyone taking part in the clean-up will have their names included for the draw for a variety of prizes donated by businesses around the Island.
WHAT A MESS! -- Outraged Keep Bermuda Beautiful president Mrs. Kendaree Burgess Fairn stands at an illegal dump site on South Shore in Warwick. The garbage contained doors, toilets, air conditioning grilles, wet lavendar paint, paint cans, rollers and shutters.
