Family mansion on the garden tour

The approach to "Belvedere'' is rather romantic and alluring with a long driveway leading up to the impressive Paget home.

On the left, majestic palms provide a graceful salute and on the right an extensive green picket fence encloses acreage and horses with stables.

Belvedere's exterior has a youthful appearance painted in a soft, vibrant yellow with green shutters and white trim.

This handsome home was built in 1846 as a country house for William Hall Darrell on three acres of farmland overlooking the South Shore. The site was chosen because of its proximity to Hamilton.

In 1991, the present owner began alterations on the original house and within two years restored the home to its impeccable condition.

Several alterations occurred. The huge white pillars, now supporting the roof of a grand porch facing south, were taken from the front entrance on the west and replaced with a portico over the front door.

A garage, and pool were added and the kitchen was transformed into a 35 foot long room fitted with state-of-the-art appliances and a breakfast nook.

Additionally, central air-conditioning and heat were added.

Beneath the roof, old cedar beams and laths were discovered and left exposed.

The attractive and spacious foyer divides the downstairs. The expansive dining room is on the left and the inviting living room, with a lovely fireplace, is to the right.

Charming french doors, off of the living room, open onto the gracious south porch perfect for summer dinners.

"This home affords us the best of both worlds. It has history and an old charming design yet it is modern,'' said the lady of the house.

This fine home was recently listed on the tour of The Garden Club of Bermuda.
