`First ladies' go to auction for charity

In a copycat move of Sotheby's auction of the possessions of the former resident of the White House, "Otherby's'' will be holding a "not to be missed, celebrity fun auction'' of items donated by the wives of Bermuda's premiers.
Funds raised will go to the aid of the Learning Centre, a registered charity that helps children with academic and development problems.
The auction takes place tomorrow at the Bermuda National Gallery beginning at 5.15 p.m.
The auctioneers -- "novices'', stressed organiser Brenda Richardson -- are Centre Re vice-president George Hutchings and Cabinet Secretary Leopold Mills.
The event will feature everything from needlepoint, jewellery and paintings to hats and gloves worn at state occasions.
WOMANA ALLOWED TEENS TO HAVE SEX CTS Woman allowed teens to have sex A 46-year-old Devonshire mother was yesterday handed a three-month prison sentence -- suspended for two years -- and fined $300 dollars after pleading guilty in Magistrates' Court to exposing a child to moral danger.
Acting Magistrate Kim White was told the accused allowed her 13-year-old niece, and the niece's 18-year-old boyfriend, access to her home where the couple engaged in sex. The two had been forbidden by their parents to see each other, Crown counsel Leighton Rochester told the court.
Duty counsel Kim Wilson told the court the accused thought the two were only going to talk.
"This is a very serious charge, placing a child in moral danger,'' Mr. White told the accused.
There was no indication whether the 18-year-old male would be facing court action.
DIGGERS PUT POLICE COMPUTERS OUT POL Diggers put Police computers out Police headquarters at Prospect was yesterday left without three-quarters of its computers after a crew from Butterfield Excavating -- digging for a temporary construction fence -- accidently severed two cable ducts.
Telephones to some departments -- including Police Media Relations and the training school -- were knocked out for most of the morning.
Police Operations was not affected and continued to take emergency 911 calls.
It is estimated repairs will take a few days before service to all departments is restored.
DOG BURNED TO DEATH, POLICE CALLED CRM Dog burned to death, Police called Police are investigating the possible killing of a dog which was found burned to death on Tuesday.
The pit bull was found with burns covering its body at a North Shore Road residence in Pembroke, said Government dog warden Shinah Simons.
He could not provide further details as the matter is being handled by the Police but he did reveal that a necropsy would be performed on the animal and that officers had spoken to the dog's owner.
YOUNG MEN'S HOME SEEKS TO EXPAND HSG Young men's home seeks to expand The Bermuda Housing Corporation is expanding a residential care facility for troubled young males and is in the process of seeking approval from the Department of Planning.
The Corporation is seeking to make alterations to two existing apartments at 8 Aeolia Drive in Devonshire, and plans to create a four-bedroom residential care facility, with two bathrooms, kitchen and dining facilities, living area, laundry and four showers.
The centre will also house an office and have wired security windows installed throughout. The Corporation tendered architectural plans for the 2,480 square-foot addition to the Department of Planning at the end of January.
Minister of Health Clarence Terceira said the complex would house about six to eight youths and is designed to take up some of the slack from the closing of the old Reach Out centre.
Government's long-range plan was to create a unified facility at the north Devonshire site, bounded by Palmetto Road and Parsons Lane, he said.
THIEVES STRIKE TWO GUEST PROPERTIES CRM Thieves strike two guest properties Thieves continued to make their mark on Bermuda's beleaguered tourism industry Police yesterday reported, breaking into two separate hotel rooms to rob visitors as they slept.
One visitor staying at a Paget hotel reported someone entered his room as he slept during the early hours of Tuesday morning.
The thief removed a wallet containing a quantity of cash, credit cards, and identification, together with a shoulder bag containing a set of darts, playing cards and other personal items.
Meanwhile a couple staying at a Southampton hotel were also victimised the same evening. They reported to Police that around 10:30 p.m. they went to bed, and upon waking up the next morning discovered someone had stolen cash from a purse and wallet. No other items were reported missing.
Police have not ruled out the possibility the two incidents are related and are continuing to investigate.
MAN ARRESTED IN ALLEGED SEX ATTACK CRM Man arrested in alleged sex attack Police Tuesday morning arrested a 36-year-old man in connection with an alleged sexual assault at the Number One shed along Front Street in Hamilton.
A 27-year-old Warwick woman reported she was assaulted by the man when she went to use the public washroom there around 9:30 a.m. She told Police the man grabbed and indecently assaulted her, but she managed to break free and call the Police, providing them with a description of the suspect.
He was arrested a short time later along Front Street.
MAN JAILED FOR RECEIVING STOLEN BIKE CRM Man jailed for receiving stolen bike Craig William Stapff was sent to prison for six months yesterday for receiving a stolen motorcycle valued at $500.
The offence occurred sometime between December 29, 1996 and January 7, 1997.
Stapff, 34, of Cove Point Lane Pembroke admitted the offence in Magistrates' Court.
Sgt. Phil Taylor said that the cycle had been left at the City hall parking lot around 7.45 p.m. on December 20.
An off-duty officer later saw Stapff riding the bike. Despite his steadfast denials that he did not know the cycle had been stolen, Magistrate Edward King sent Stapff to prison because he committed the offence while on probation and had a lengthy criminal history.
DON'T LEAVE VALUABLES IN CAR -- POLICE CRM Don't leave valuables in car - Police Police yesterday issued a warning to the public about leaving valuable items in unattended vehicles.
The warning came after two women reported their handbags were stolen from their cars.
One complainant said she parked and locked her car on Front Street, but left the window down slightly. When she returned her purse was gone. Another woman told Police she had driven home after attending a social engagement and rushed inside, leaving her handbag in her car.
The next day she discovered her bag was missing.
