Future barristers earn AS&K scholarships
As the Appleby, Spurling & Kempe (AS&K) Legal Education Scholarship Programme enters its third decade, yet another bright Bermudian student has been awarded a scholarship.
Michelle Correia, of Hamilton Parish, is the 1998 recipient of the award which is worth $12,500 a year for three years.
The 22-year-old will begin her law studies at the College of Law in Guildford, England, having completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in History at Queen's University, in Kingston, Ontario.
Miss Correia attended the Bermuda High School for Girls and Saltus Grammar School. She hopes to qualify as a barrister in the UK.
"We remain committed to providing financial assistance to those seeking a career in the legal profession and we are proud to support Bermuda's future lawyers,'' said AS&K managing partner Dianna Kempe.
"It is encouraging to see so many young people entering the profession, and particularly to see so many women.'' According to figures compiled by the Association, women presently account for 30 percent of the membership, an increase from 20 percent in 1990.
"The continued success of Bermuda's international business and the strength of the local economy demand a trained work force and opens up many opportunities for Bermuda's lawyers.'' Bursary awards of $6,000 were also handed out to law students Chen Foley, N.
Koshea Scott, and David DaCosta.
Stephen Males and Gordon Woolridge Jr. each received a bursary of $3,000.
