*** A local charity was the recent beneficiary of an act of kindness from several of their fellow compatriots.

Thirty-one charities banded together and donated funds to the Lady Cubitt Compassionate Association -- part of the proceeds from their own efforts to raise money for their individual charities over the May 24 holiday.

"During the first Bermuda Day stall holders meeting, the participants decide which charitable organisation will receive the fees,'' explained Youth and Sport's Deirdre Otway. "This year the stall holders decided to donate their fees to the LCCA.

"In 1998 the Women's Resource Centre received the funds.'' While all the profits from the individual stalls went to the various charities and/or church groups licensed to sell goods at Bernard Park, the $2,000 in stall fees were recently presented to the LCCA.

"It was one of the largest donations ever given to a charity from the Bermuda Day stall holders,'' Mrs. Otway pointed out. "They had the option of keeping the fees and directing them to their own charities, but they decided to help another one.'' The LCCA attempts to relieve poverty, suffering and distress in Bermuda. The organisation, founded in 1932 by Lady Cubitt, wife of the then Governor, also screens applications for funding for overseas medical and/or surgical treatment not available in Bermuda.
