Haven nearly finished
traditional "roof-wetting'' ceremony of Bayview, the new house for the Haven Trust.
The property, on Happy Valley Road, Pembroke, will be the new base for the charity which helps homeless teenage mothers. It is expected to open early next year.
The charity is moving after a deal was struck with Government over their former property, which was expected to be encroached upon by expansions at Berkeley Institute.
Haven trustee Olga Scott said: "We exchanged with Government and they provided us with a building we could rent.'' The Bayview property was formerly a 3,000 square foot private residence next to Fort Hamilton. But architects Stephen Squire and Phillip Nearon re-modelled it into a modern housing complex.
Mr. Squire said: "We looked at the site to see what we could work with.'' The result was a modern 9,500 square foot building which can house ten residents, ten children and one live-in matron.
Facilities include bedroom suites, a commercial kitchen and laundry, administration office, dining and living rooms.
While the property belongs to Haven Trust, the programme that houses and assists teen mothers is run by Teen Services.
Haven trustee Charles Vaucrosson said he was pleased with the complex, adding it was convenient to Hamilton.
New haven: Works and Engineering Minister Alex Scott and The Haven trustee Olga Scott -- his wife -- perform the traditional "roof-wetting'' ceremony of Bayview.
