Jazz stars to visit in autumn

George Benson, Herbie Mann, Dianne Reeves, Cassandra Wilson and Lee Ritenour will headline Bermuda's first jazz festival.

Jazzcape, sponsored by the Department of Tourism and Travel and Leisure Magazine, will run from October 11 to 13 at venues all over the Island.

In addition to evening weekend performances, free daytime festivities will showcase Jazzcape artists and local talent.

The West End Development Corporation's annual cultural festival will also be held in conjunction with Jazzcape activities. And Harbour and Heritage Nights will also be extended through the week leading up to the event.

Tourism Minister David Dodwell yesterday expressed confidence that the event would be a success.

"This is quite an ambitious programme we are undertaking but we are confident that with artist such as George Benson and Cassandra Wilson, the Jazzcape festival will be a success,'' Mr. Dodwell said.

He added: The festival is another great way to appeal to first time visitors, while extending Heritage and harbour Nights is a sure way to attract visitors to St. George's and Hamilton to enjoy true Bermuda heritage and traditions.'' No details on the cost of Jazzcape were available last night.
