Letter from the Ministry of Works and Engineering
Since the mid 1980's, the Ministry of Works and Engineering has been actively involved in providing both financial, physical, and educational support to Keep Bermuda Beautiful, (KBB). A close working relationship has been forged throughout the years. The Ministry and KBB plan and implement a wide variety of waste management and environmental campaigns and projects, from responsible waste disposal, anti-litter campaigns and cleanups. The Ministry provides trucks and personnel to help move the garbage generated in most clean ups as well as supplying some garbage and recycling bags.
Educating our youth on waste management and the environment is one of our many successful joint ventures. This venture sees our Education Officer working closely with KBB in school visits where they give lectures, show videos, encourage recycling and plan cleanups involving students and school personnel.
The relationship that exists between the Ministry and KBB is beneficial to both parties and Bermuda as a whole. In certain situations KBB as a charity, may be more effective than Government in communicating the message across to the public that littering and illegal dumping is socially and environmentally unacceptable behaviour which must be stopped.
Attitudes must change. Sometimes people will listen to an organisation which has generated good will amongst the public whereas they would turn a deaf ear to anything the authorities (i.e. Government) may say.
The Ministry is very please and happy to be associated with KBB. KBB has our fullest support and we look forward to carrying this partnership into the new millennium. We have every intention of keeping our pledge to make the `New Bermuda a cleaner Bermuda', but can only achieve this if every resident of Bermuda makes it a commitment to do the same.
