Lions clubs to raise $100,000 for KEMH

Bermuda have come together to help raise $100,000 which will go towards updating the endoscopic equipment at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

Lions zone chairman Mr. Jim Michelsen said the clubs wanted a major project to work towards to mark the anniversary.

"The fundraising committee contacted the hospital to find out what their major needs were and where we could assist, and we were informed that there was a need for endoscopic equipment,'' he said.

Endoscopic surgery looks into the intestines, stomach or colon of a patient using a scope-like instrument.

"A number of activities have been planned to kick off the fundraising campaign which begins tomorrow afternoon with a fashion show and garden party chaired by Ms Desi Waldron at Chelston in Paget.

"We hope to raise $50,000 locally and apply for a matching grant from the Lions Club International foundation as the unit costs $100,000.'' Dr. Wilbert Warner, a consultant in internal medicine, said the hospital would like to upgrade its current endoscopic equipment to a video endoscope which would enable the hospital to set up a full-fledged unit.
