Major Elmer Pavy of the Salvation Army accepted the $800 cheque, which will be used for the general living expenses of homeless men and women who seek the Army's assistance.

The money was raised by a special fund drive throughout the New York-Bermuda Lions and Lioness District, founded in 1989 under the direction of zone chairman Mr. Gimm Cruz Labao of New York.

Lions, Lioness Clubs and other private organisations and individuals contributed to the campaign, which has already provided shelter for homeless individuals in New York City. Some of the money will also go to programmes in the Philippines.
