Works & Engineering Minister Alex Scott yesterday said: "A Cabinet memo on the subject is being prepared.'' Mr. Scott explained that under the lease of the former Base lands, which does not terminate until 2040, the US Government is responsible for the cost of repair and replacement of the bridge which connects the Airport and St.

George's with the rest of the Island.

Plans to include the replacement of the bridge as part of the deal for the sale of Chelston, the US Consul General's local home, to the Bermuda Government fell through when the estate was sold to a US businessman.

Mr. Scott said the US Government had missed out on that opportunity to address their responsibilities for Longbird Bridge and so another approach would have to be made.

The response from the US concerning its obligations to the Bermuda Government so far had "not been encouraging'', he admitted.
