Meal on Wheels

Services and programmes: Preparation and delivery of about 150 meals four times a week. The demand is increasing and, as the population and life expectancy rise, we anticipate this number increasing. Delivery to the home provides a reassuring daytime check on the recipient. Luncheon clubs are held monthly in the parishes of Paget, Devonshire and Sandys. Transport can be arranged for senior citizens to attend.

Structure and history: Founded by Dorothy Evans and Kay Robinson in 1975.

Initially meals were bought from the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and delivered to 15 recipients. Increased demand resulted in the rental of St.

Paul's Christian Education Centre kitchen. In September 1996 moved into new headquarters with purpose-built kitchen. Officially opened on the 21st birthday of Meals on Wheels on October 15, 1996 by his Excellency the Governor. Referrals are from doctors, medical social workers, welfare officers, PALS, family members, etc.
