Mount St. Agnes student planning for bright future
place at college or university and between them, have been awarded a record $100,000 in scholarships.
Sister Judith Rollo, principal of the co-ed school says that she is "very pleased'' with this year's results which are "the best in a very long time.'' Fourteen students have secured places at US institutions, and 12 will be entering well-known Canadian universities. Three will go on to the Bermuda College and two students have also been accepted to join Up With People.
Seven students have already been awarded over $33,000 for their first year of tuition.
At graduation ceremonies, the Nicholl Shield was awarded to Gregory Lindo and The Most Reverend Bishop Murphy shield went to Jeffrey Castro.
Julie Murdoch and Harry Botelho were the two winners of The Robert Gullon Memorial Shield for Heart and were also awarded $500 each toward their college education.
Mr. Raymond Medeiros, a 1965 graduate of Mount St. Agnes and member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Bermuda awarded their Outstanding Student Award to Heidi Marshall.
The annual Incentive Award, donated by the Scholarship Committee was awarded to Heidi Michelsen.
Sister Judith says that this year's graduating class was not outstandingly gifted. "As a group they are actually weaker than some years in the past, but they have all worked extremely hard. We have emphasised that in the '90's, it is not good enough to just get a high school diploma -- it is vital, these days, to go on and get a degree. And these students seem to have listened to our advice. I am very proud of their achievements.''
