Ms Fitness walking on air after stunning win

New Ms Fitness Bermuda Lisa Jones is still on cloud nine over her victory in front of a packed City Hall on Sunday night.

"I'm absolutely elated,'' said the 25-year-old computer training manager with Applied Computer Technologies.

The competition, put on by Devrae Noel-Simmons and the Bermuda National Fitness sanctioning body, had eight women competing in three rounds.

The first round saw them give a 90-second discourse on their fitness philosophies while dressed in evening gowns, the swimsuit round had them showing off their body symmetry and muscle definition and the third round consisted of a 90-second aerobic routine which highlighted flexibility, strength and endurance.

The show also featured three fitness celebrities, Debbie Kruck, Renita Harris and Don Long, as guest posers.

Ms Jones said: "I have been seriously training for about six months but I only decided to enter the competition five weeks ago.

"The last few weeks I've been training for five hours each day and I've been on a high protein and carbohydrate, low fat diet. I'm sick to death of turkey!'' She added: "I could not have done it without the motivation of my partner Ian Brunson.'' Mr. Brunson was the champion in the men's middleweight body building class, won first place in artistic posing and was crowned Mr. Bermuda at the body building show on Saturday night.

The first runner up in Sunday's competition was landscape architect and interior designer Geraldine Jones while Police officer Georgia Belboda -- the winner in 1994 -- came third.

All three will represent Bermuda in November and March at various International Fitness competitions where they will have the chance to win up to $50,000.

Despite the show starting almost an hour late after technical difficulties, fans seemed to enjoy themselves as Bermudian comedian Bootsie kept them amused.

The competition was judged by international judges Carla Dunlop Kaan, a former Ms Olympia, Ms Harris, Ms Kruck and Deidre Pagnalli.

"The competition was lots of fun and everyone was great,'' Ms Jones continued.

"There was a great spirit backstage and everyone helped each other fix their dresses and gave each other lots of encouragement.

"If people are inspired by fitness they should set goals and make a commitment to themselves to achieve them. Consistency and hard work are they keys to success.'' MS FITNESS -- Lisa Jones and Devrae Noel-Simmons
