`Mythical, musical comedy' explores teen relationships

Students at the Berkeley Institute will use elements of comedy and mythology to tackle the thorny side of teen relationships in a play that starts up tomorrow.

Berkeley drama teacher and director Jocelyn Wiley described the play, entitled "Switching Places'', as a "mythical musical comedy''.

"The play is about a pair of teens -- a boy-meet-girl situation -- and the gods of love are affecting what happens,'' she said.

The play addresses some of the difficulties and possible consequences of teenage relationships, including peer pressure and pregnancy.

The script was originally written by a Canadian, although Mrs. Wiley and the students spent time rewriting and "Bermudianising'' the script.

"It started out as a one-act play, and I adapted it so more student could participate -- it was made for a cast of four, but now there's ten as well as a number of singers and dancers,'' said Mrs. Wiley.

Students ranging in age from 14 to 16 will be singing and dancing to highlight the dramatic side of the Berkeley performance.

Mrs. Wiley noted that one of the Fifth Year girls along with a Berkeley alumni have been working together to provide the choreography for the performance.

The play, which runs from March 11 to 13, begins at 7.30 p.m. at Berkeley.

Tickets are $10 and $20 for patrons. For more information or for advance tickets, call 292-4752.
