New seaside restaurant part of major facelift at Ariel Sands
Ariel Sands Beach Club has undergone a major face lift over the winter, providing it with a new outdoor restaurant and many other modifications throughout and surrounding the main building. The proposal for a new restaurant and extensions to revitalise the Clubhouse were developed by designers Mr. Stephen Lake, of Barker and Lindbergh design agency and Mr.
Michael Emery, of Urban Design Associates. Mr. Lake did the interior work while Mr. Emery did the outside renovations. Both men worked closely with Mr.
Malcolm Griffiths of the West End Development Company who consulted on the landscaping development. Ariel Sands with its spectacular ocean views can now fully provide its guests with a good view from every vantage point, as well as a luxurious indoor setting. A new restaurant featuring `al fresco' dining has been integrated into the facilities already available at the club. It provides a link between the clubhouse and the grounds leading down to the water side. A new exterior entrance into the kitchen provides waiter service to the tables on the new terraces constructed at the south-western end of the dining room.
Mr. Emery and his firm acknowledge the fact that management at the hotel maintained a positive attitude and responded quite well to the recommendations of he and his partner, owner of the firm Mr. Stanely Kennedy. "It was a very successful project from a working standpoint.'' said Mr. Kennedy. The design was meant to embrace the wide expanse of the grounds along with the open sky while keeping in mind the flow of the building and having the interior meet that space. The material used to build the terrace restaurant was a pressure treated lumber and a red wood for the trellis canopy over the balcony. This material was picked in order to incorporate the natural atmosphere and create that tropical appearance. It was also considered the best kind of wood to hold up to the wear and tear that it would be pitted against by insects and the elements. Mr. Emery said: "It was an exciting project, it was a bit of a challenge because often when selling an idea to a customer it is not always accepted once the work is completed.'' "We feel it will be a great addition to the hotel and wish them the best.'' The old dining area now opens onto the upper terrace and the terraces descend and link up with the paved patio under the bay grape trees. To ensure that guests can enjoy the scenery while they eat, a new exterior entrance into the kitchen provides waiter service to tables on the terrace. Management at the Hotel hope that the new facility will become a popular local lunch and dinner spot as it is only a few minutes away from Hamilton. The extended outdoor facility allows guests some seclusion around the pool in that the lower terraces are ideal for those lunching in bathing suits.
The effect of the new additions provide the beach club with an unsurpassed yet flexible area for dining, capable of accommodating large parties and intimate groups.
The formal dining area and beach side patio called Caliban's will be serviced by the existing large and well equipped kitchen.
Directly underneath the outdoor deck, which is made completely of pine, is a newly renovated bar and a new conference room housing a gigantic round wooden polished table.
Other additions include an exercise room and major kitchen appliances.
A total refurbishment of the dining room has been done including new carpeting, furniture, linen, and drapery.
Mr. Lake who did all the interior changes created a new look for the existing dining area, lounge, and foyer. He also did some work on the offices in back of the front desk area.
Club is brighter, more practical into a larger function room facility. The lounge is divided to separate it from the dining room using doors that fold into each other to open and give the impression of one large room. And to make the room more private on its own, the designers have employed the use of indoor plants and sensitive lighting. Mr. Lake wanted to make the foyer more lively and exciting as opposed to the old look which was considered dark and dull. The colours which were regal and earthy are now warm and tranquil with a slightly tropical nature. He used an octagonal shape umbrella awning and low voltage barer wire lighting imported from Canada to give the foyer a new look. DaCosta Construction did all the reconstruction work using maple wood which is a hard wearing timber with a natural stain. The front desk was done by routing out the panels and staining them individually in order to give the effect of an inlaid appearance. Other changes include a new administration office built behind the reception desk and new lighting fixtures throughout the building.
Mr. Lake said: "It was a very exciting job and a lot of fun to work on. We have made a tremendous improvement on the old facility giving it a completely new appearance.''
