Internal medicine expert Dr. Wilbert Warner told Hamilton Lions that a new $100,000 endoscopic suite at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital -- which the club helped to fund -- will help to identify colon cancer sufferers in time for them to be treated.

"Colon cancer has been the number one cancer killer in Bermuda and is being tackled in North America and here as well,'' he said. "The thing with colon cancer is that, if we had taken the 20 people who had died from the disease last year and gone back in time five or ten years those deaths could have been prevented.

"That's the direction we're heading -- we need to identify those people who are at risk from developing the disease in the future. We don't have all the answers but the clues are falling into place.'' The suite has modern endoscopic equipment to examine the lining of the stomach and colon.
