Popular US musician is back to play to island audience
American folk-rocker Cliff Eberhardt returns to Bermuda for a special one-night show this weekend.
Last year's appearance with the Bermuda Folk Club was so popular that organisers have moved this Saturday's show to a larger venue -- the Mariners' Club -- to accommodate all his fans.
No less an authority than "Billboard'' magazine has named Eberhardt as one of the up and coming stars of the '90s. And a review in "The New York Post'' wrote that "what makes this performer so rare is the self-assurance and poise he brings to his flawless show.'' His first CD, "The Long Road'', has been rated No. 1 album by "East Coast Rocker'', the only weekly music newspaper in the US.
His music, which has been described as "reminiscent of Springsteen and Dylan with a ferociously individual style that surely augurs stardom'', has attracted an enormous following, especially on the East Coast music circuit.
The New York-based singer and songwriter was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and says that it was the appearance of the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show that sealed his fate: By the age of eight, the self-taught guitarist was already performing in public.
By the mid-'80s, Eberhardt, who had now played at all the major New York clubs, toured the US, Canada and Europe, where he appeared on German radio and Spanish TV. In Canada, he was given a TV special, In Session.
Jamie Gaull, whose 12-string guitar caught Eberhardt's attention last year when he asked the Folk Club regular to stand in for Richie Havens during some of his numbers, will provide the opening act.
The show will take place on Saturday, February 27 at 8.15 p.m. Tickets at $15 ($10 for members) are available in advance at Opus 1 on Reid Street and a limited number will be on sale at the door on the night of the show.
