Raising the colourful roofs of eastern Europe

"Where has she been now?'' That is the question aficionados of Ann Smith Gordon's popular slide shows are always asking, not just because the widely travelled Bermudian brings back such fascinating photographic records of the countries she visits, but also because the premier screening of each new adventure always benefits the cancer charity, Patients' Assistance League & Service (PALS), of which she is President.

The answer is "central Europe,'' and the date for the new show is Wednesday next, April 18. The venue is the Mount St. Agnes auditorium, and the starting time is 8 p.m.

In this audio-visual presentation, entitled `The Magic of Central Europe,' Mrs. Smith Gordon will trace a journey through the beautiful lands of the Hungarian and Czech Republics, and also offer glimpses of Vienna and Salzburg in Austria.

It will begin in Hungary's fascinating capital, Budapest, and include the extraordinary skills of that country's fierce horsemen on the great plain known as Pustza, plus scenes of a memorable Easter Sunday spent in a tiny, remote, mediaeval mountain village.

In Austria, scenes will include Vienna's famous Spanish Riding School and some of its splendid palaces. In Oberndorf, near Salzburg, viewers will see where the Christmas carol `Silent Night' was composed.

The journey through the Czech Republic will include the UNESCO World Heritage site, Ceske Krumlov, and the enchanting city of Prague, with its famed Charles Bridge, ancient cobblestone lanes, castle complex, and more.

On a sober note, Mrs. Smith Gordon's lens will visit little-known Terezin, which the Nazis used as a last transit camp for Jews on their way to extermination during the Second World War.

Tickets for `The Magic of Central Europe' are available from PALS volunteers, or the registered charity's headquarters at Dunrossil House, 21 Point Finger Road, Paget. All proceeds will go towards the PALS building fund. For further information 236-7257.

Czech this! This splendid view of Prague Castle, and St. Vitus Cathedral within its precincts, is but one glimpse of the Czech Republic's beautiful capital city which Mrs. Ann Smith Gordon will share with her audience during the April 18 audio visual presentation in aid of the cancer charity, PALS.

Beautiful Budapest: The majestic neo Gothic architecture of Hungary's parliament building, completed in 1904, is seen from across the river Danube in Budapest. Scenes such as this will form part of Mrs. Ann Smith Gordon's forthcoming audio visual show at Mount St. Agnes Academy auditorium.

Cityscape: This view from Prague Castle, which includes the Charles Bridge, gives a sense of just how large and densely populated the Czech Republic's capital city is.

Nonetheless, it is renowned for its fine architecture and overall beauty.

Little Charmer: Clutching a toy bunny and wearing her national dress, this little girl makes her way to Easter celebrations in a remote medieval village in the Hungarian mountains. To reach the tiny, fairytale setting where the child lived meant a post-dawn start, but the journey was well worth it for photographer Mrs. Ann Smith Gordon and her fellow travellers.
