Schoolkids duplicate election
election fever last week.
A mock election at the Pembroke school coincided with the real thing last Tuesday.
The four candidates, Daa Iyah Muhamme of the Party of Persistent Effort, Laura Schoenberger of the United Kids Party, Henry Gordon Masters of the United Party People, and Ryan Marshall of the United Students Party, had been given the previous week to persuade their schoolmates to vote for them.
Each of the four had a running mate and a campaign manager to help them prepare for the big day.
And it was the United Party People's Henry Masters who proved to be the popular choice with Ryan Marshall finishing a close second.
Teacher in charge of the mock election, Mr. Peter LePage said: "In order to heighten the students' interest in the election and the election process the school decided to hold its own election.
"The four candidates were chosen and given one week to campaign. They put up posters, handed out leaflets and spoke to the rest of the students in an effort to gain votes.'' The candidates' biggest ordeal proved to be question time when junior school students were allowed to grill the quartet of 11-year-olds.
Mr. LePage added: "On the day we tried to duplicate, as much as possible, the way you would cast your vote in the real thing.
"It was clear from the students' reactions the they had enjoyed the opportunity to vote and had learned a great deal about the way Members of Parliament are elected.''
