Some key players -- and composers -- in the Conservatory of Music
Janet Budden is a graduate of London's Royal Academy of Music, where she studied voice and piano. The mezzo-soprano's operatic career took her to the Royal Opera House, the English National Opera, the Welsh National Opera, and the English Opera Group, and she has also sung in Europe.
In Britain, she was the successful head of vocal studies at two English boarding schools before coming to Bermuda to join the BCM, where she teaches voice and some piano.
Jay Butler has been playing the violin since age four. The young Bermudian is a fifth-year student at Warwick Academy, where he is leader of both the string and full orchestras.
He won the Bermuda Festival's Most Outstanding Junior Violinist award in 1994 and the Most Outstanding Solo Performance award in 1996. Jay has performed twice in Premier's concerts; toured the US and Canada with the Suzuki senior violin group in 1996 and also participated in the competitive Young Artists programme at the Suzuki Summer Institute at Queen's University in Canada.
Tatiana Dran, holds a BA degree in composition and piano performance from Belgrade Music Academy, and a Master's degree from Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh. She is currently completing her doctoral thesis in composition and theory.
Prior to joining the Bermuda Conservatory as a piano teacher, Ms Dran taught piano at high school in Yugoslavia, the University of Pittsburgh .
Vic Glazer is an accomplished conductor, arranger and pianist.
A child prodigy, he studied at North Texas State University College of Music.
Mr. Glazer's glittering professional career as a conductor, arranger and pianist includes working with Jack Jones, Robert Goulet, Connie Francis and Rich Little. While Frankie Avalon's music director for eleven years, he appeared twice at the White House.
Nikki Herbst holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Lethbridge and a Master's degree in piano performance from Brandon University, both in Alberta, Canada. Before arriving in Bermuda in 1997, she taught traditional and Suzuki piano at the Eckhardt-Gramatte Conservatory of Music at Brandon University. Her solo and accompanying performances include work with opera, musical theatre, orchestras and recitals. Locally, she has performed with the Daylesford Sinfonia, the Bermuda Philharmonic, and as a soloist and accompanist in several Bermuda Conservatory concerts.
Jyrki Pietila holds a Master's degree in music education from Finland's Helsinki Conservatory of Music. He also studied with Dr. Suzuki, and received a distinguisned Carl Klingler scholarship to complete his Suzuki teacher training in Japan. Graduating from the Talent Education Institute in Matsumoto, Japan, Mr. Pietila was granted status as a European Teacher Trainer in 1991. He taught workshops and international conferences in Finland, France, Scotland, Korea, Ireland, California and Colorado.
In addition, the Finnish violinist enjoys performing as a chamber and orchestral musician.
His vision is to create a nurturing and loving environment in which all children can achieve excellence.
Dr. Karol-Sue Reddington received her doctorate in piano performance and secondary emphasis on music theory at the University of Cincinnati's College Conservatory of Music. Teaching her specialty of 20th century music in university graduate programmes, she was awarded grants and fellowships to premiere works.
As a teacher of piano, harpsichord, organ and theory, Dr. Reddington has been involved in appearances and faculty appointments in Hong Kong, Europe North America and Bermuda.
She has also appeared as a soloist and ensemble performer in a variety of major concerts here. In addition, she lectures at the Bermuda National Gallery and the Bermuda College, serves on the Bermuda Arts Festival Committee, and continues as the Artist Events chair at BCM.
