Somerset dance school set to swing

The junior members of the school will give a special matinee performance on Saturday, May 9.

Evening programmes will feature the older students who will perform classical ballet, jazz, tap and modern dance pieces as well as character dances which have been choreographed by their teachers Jayne Hawkins, Deborah Marett, Sal Hodgson and Toni Ferreira.

The Somerset School of Dancing, which is under the direction of Mrs. Hodgson, has been in operation for 28 years. The students are taught the Royal Academy of Dancing syllabus from pre-primary to grade eight.

The students perform and show biannually and are examined annually by examiners sent from The Royal Academy of Dancing.

This year, the Somerset School of Dancing will be holding a summer school for senior students of classical ballet. The programme is being directed by Laurence Haider who choreographed and directed the Bermuda Civic Ballet's production of "Sylvia'' at Government House in August, 1997.

The summer programme is open to students from all the local dance schools. For more information Mrs. Hodgson at 234-2164.

Tickets for Dance, Rhythm and Rhyme can be obtained at City Hall box office from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Saturday. Evening performances at $20 and matinee $10. The matinee starts at 7.30 p.m.

*** The Bermuda Nurses Association presents "A Community Health Extravaganza'' in celebration of the Nurses Week Theme "Partnership for Community Health''.

Starting tomorrow, May 6, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at St. Paul's Centennial Hall, Hamilton, there will be free blood pressure, blood sugar and blood cholesterol screening.

Premier Pamela Gordon will open the event at 12 p.m. There will be an aerobic demonstration at 1 p.m.

Other displays and information booths will be: The Police Service, Fire Service, Asthma and Allergy Centre, PALS, Women's Resource Centre, Organ Donation and many more.

*** Tomorrow, Director of the Bermuda Maritime Museum Dr. Edward Harris will be the guest speaker at the Friends of the College Library's Heritage Month. The topic of the illustrated presentation is "Bermuda's Forts from the Air: 1612-1945: Bermuda's Heritage by Helicopter.'' Dr. Harris is the author of a number of books, and his talk will be based on the recently published Bermuda Forts 1612-1957.

Copies of this book will be available at a special discount price of $65 after the lecture.

Dr. Harris gathered the pictures for the talk over a 15 year period. The talk will be the first one ever given on this subject.

The lecture will take place in the College's New Hall Lecture Theatre starting at 7.p.m. Admission at the door is $5 and $2 for seniors, students and FOCL members. 239-4034.
