St. George opens up for annual walkabout
Christmas season by making their way to the ancient town of St. George's.
There, the National Trust will be hosting their annual Open House and `walkabout'. Many of the town's historic buildings, decorated and candlelit, will provide seasonal venues for carols and Christmas music, entertainment and refreshments.
After soaking up the atmosphere in King's Square, where St. George's Preparatory School and East End Primary School will be singing carols, visitors can wander round such historic buildings as the Tucker House and Globe Hotel, Bridge House, The Old Rectory and, for the first time, make a short detour to the Unfinished Church.
Connie Dey, disguised as Georgiana Walker, wife of the Confederate Agent sent to oversee the blockade running, will tell stories of that turbulent time in Bermuda's history, and Freda Olivey's costumed carollers will be performing in the lovely setting of the St. George's Historical Society.
The Menuhin String Foundation and the Youth Orchestra will also be performing at the Old State House.
This year, the Trust is pleased to welcome some special guests who will be participating in the night's festivities. A group of 25 will be coming from the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation to renew a close assocation with the Trust that has endured now for many years. Their Ralkeigh Tavern Society is timing their whirlwind visit to the Island specifically to tie in the Open House event.
The Trust's Open House takes place on Friday, December 4, from 6.30 to 8.30 p.m. The event will provide a chance for non-members to sign up for the Trust.
This year, membership to April 2000 is being offered at the price of one year's membership ($15), $30 for a family and $5 for students.
