`Step Out' to help fight breast cancer

3K/5K Fun Walk will be dedicated to the memory of Bermuda's leading crusader in the fight against breast cancer.

Shirley Humphreys, the founder of the breast cancer support group, Just Between Us, was a passionate advocate for increased awareness and education of the disease she once battled and eventually overcame.

"Shirley Humphreys was responsible for getting the community involved,'' said TB Cancer and Health's Dorothy Morgan-Swan. "She advocated taking a pro-active stance in women's health.

"One of her main goals was to get the TB Cancer and Health's mammogram facilities accredited and she lived to see that. But unfortunately she did not live to see the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital's facility accredited.'' A 25-year survivor of breast cancer, Mrs. Humphreys also helped to organise Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Bermuda and the Reach to Recovery programme.

"She had a purpose,'' Ms Morgan-Swan pointed out. "It wasn't about making herself famous, it was strictly about increasing awareness about breast cancer.

"She was very sincere.'' And she revealed that Mrs. Humphreys' husband and son will be on hand for the October 6 Fun Walk to address participants.

Mrs. Humphreys passed away July 29, 1999.
