Students examine how science affects tourism

various aspects of science and how they impact on our visitors. The topics will be examined in depth, encompassing a variety of subjects within the curriculum, with results showcased at the school's science fair. "What we tried to do was to make it cross-curriculum, with an emphasis on science and a link to the tourism industry,'' explained school principal Marguerite Fields.

"So we're looking at the things that attract visitors to our country -- the weather, the flora and fauna, the ocean and entertainment, but with an emphasis on science. We intend to explore these particular topics in depth but take a scientific slant.'' As part of the activities, said Mrs. Fields, posters will decorate the hall depicting those things a visitor might see on the Island. "I know some children in one of the classes will write about a hurricane in Bermuda from a tourist's point of view. Also, some will probably make field trips and incorporate visits to such places as the Botanical Gardens, and the Bermuda Biological Station for Research will most certainly be referred to.'' A number of experiments will be conducted and will be on display for those who attend the fair, she added. "Primary five is looking at how vapour turns into water and what part cohesion plays in the formation of a raindrop and they will conduct hands-on activities to better understand the process behind the formation of a raindrop. Some of the older students will look at how sound travels and how we hear and how it is related to music. So they will go outside the school and into the environment, identifying sounds Science at work graphs, speed effects and sound effects.'' Held every other year, Mrs. Fields said each class will focus on a different aspect of science with experiments on public display on the evenings of the 25th and the 26th. "Across the board, each class will have a scientific method displayed and an experiment segment with hands on activities and material to make it consistent across the board. "So essentially, the whole emphasis we have is on tourism. We've just taken the science part a little further because we feel it is important that (it) be emphasised. It also stimulates the students into thinking about things as it gives them a little bit more to learn about the world in which they live.'' EDUCATION MONTH ED
