Money raised will go towards recently begun major renovations of the refuge for orphaned and homeless children.

The project, funded entirely through private donations and fundraising efforts, is aimed at enlarging and improving the Sunshine League facilities. A larger office, living room and larger bedrooms will mean the home will accommodate a larger number of displaced children.

"They told us the building was a disaster waiting to happen,'' said league spokeswoman Mrs. Lyn Tucker.

The renovations, planned since 1992, will mean the home is better equipped to provide a comfortable environment for the children.

Sunshine League tag days, yesterday and today, follow the first of three major donations by the Bank of Bermuda Centennial Trust Fund to the home.

Last week, senior vice president at the bank, Mr. Louis Mowbray presented a cheque for $50,000 to Mrs. Tucker.

The donation was the first of three donations totaling $150,000 the bank has pledged to the Sunshine League over the next three years.

"It is part of a drive intended to give it a great boost right at the start,'' said Mr. Mowbray.

The Centennial Trust Fund was set up in 1989 to mark the 100th anniversary of the bank. Proceeds of the fund are directed to different charitable organisations each year at the discretion of an allocation committee.

"They look at major projects beyond the reach of private donations and which are in the long term interest of the Island,'' he said. "This project seemed particularly important.''
