The annual School Chess Championships were held at Saltus on Saturday with six teams competing in the junior event and five in the senior event.
In the junior event, West Pembroke won 13 matches and lost only three. But as they were short one player they had to concede four matches. Despite this they were still strong enough to tie the defending champions Gilbert Knights.
In a play-off, West Pembroke won three, lost one and forfeited one to finish ahead of Gilbert by three points to two.
The star performer for West Pembroke was their captain Daniel Miller, 11, who won all five matches of his matches. Adam Birch and Andrew Simons, both aged 10, won four matches and JeVon Smith, 11, won three.
Saltus' `A' and `B' teams finished third and fourth on 111 and nine points respectively, with Mount St. Agnes just edging out Gilbert Rooks by a half-point on six-and-a-half.
In the senior event, Saltus retained the trophy with 16 points. MSA did well with their two teams to finished second and third -- `B' team 141 points, `A' team 121 .
Warwick Academy finished on 101 points and Berkeley finished in the cellar on nine points having been let down by two of their players who failed to show.
Shimon Alkon for Saltus and Brandty Winchell for MSA `A' were the star performers on number one board, tying their match and winning the other three.
B.Davis was outstanding for Berkeley on the number two board, winning all four matches as did N.Pacheco on number three board for MSA `B'.
Prizes were presented by Harry Kast of the Bermuda Chess Association.
In last week's senior league action, Islanders evened the score with Bishops in the Marks Double Elimination Knockout by winning 12-7.
Both teams have now lost to each other once and will clash again tonight to establish the winner. Islanders will be white on the odd-numbered boards.
In the other match, Independents and Kingfishers each had two losses asnd were paired off to determine the consolation winner.
Kingfishers defaulted three boards, which were worth seven points, and were beaten 91 -81 .
DARTS DRT The Ladies Darts League committee were in the driver's seat on Friday night when they defeated the Pick of the League 9-2 in their team match as Vicky Outerbridge and Carla Talbot got the only two wins for the Pick of the League.

BAA will dominate the finals at St. George's Dinghy and Sports Club on Friday (8.30), playing East End Mini Yacht Club in the team final and then being represented in the singles and doubles finals. Mother and daughter Elizabeth Simons and Brenda Hutton will battle in the singles final before teaming up to take on BAA team-mates Judy Semos and Jean Clark in the doubles final.
The mixed doubles final will be between Janet Burrows and Derek Dillas and Marilyn Lewis and Charlie Roberts.
There will also be a committee meeting on Friday at St. George's Dinghy and Sports Club at 8.30 and all captains are asked to attend or send a representative.
BASKETBALL BAS The After School Care Section of the Department of Youth and Sport is sponsoring a mini-basketball tournament starting May 18, and running through May 22.
The competition is open to boys and girls between the ages of seven and 12 and will follow a double elimination format. Matches are to be held at four venues, Heron Bay School, Elliott School, Harrington Sound School and Bernard Park, with games starting at 4 p.m. and ending at 6 p.m. except for the final, which will commence at 5.30 p.m. at Bernard Park.
In addition to the regular games, players will participate in a three-point shooting contest as well as a `game of horse' contest. Also the Bermuda Gombeys have an appearance scheduled and a prize presentation follows the completion of the day's events.
If a rain-out should occur for the championship match a rain date of May 29 has been set aside for the tournament's completion.
SOCCER SOC Women's soccer will take to the court at St. George's Community Centre on Friday night to help the centre's raise funds for a cricket tour of Canada in August.
The island's four women's soccer teams, Telecom, Rude Girls, Somerset Terminators and Dandy Stars, will be represented in the 4-a-side competition, which kicks off at 7.30.
Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for children and proceeds will go towards the three-match tour of Toronto from August 17-26.
Commercial Division team Forties will commence summer training on Wednesday evenings at 6.00 at Warwick Academy's lower field. Any new players are welcome.
TENNIS TEN Curt and Candy Smalzel of Cohasset, Massachusetts, won the Coral Beach Club weekly round robin on Sunday. The runners-up were Anthony Weldon of London, England, and Sally Moore of Fairfield, Connecticut.
GOLF GLF Players planning to participate in the Port Royal Jubilee Tournament on Sunday should have their completed forms returned no later than tomorrow. The two-ball better-ball event has a shot-gun start at 8 a.m.
