The Sickle Cell Foundation
main goals are: To increase public awareness about the prevalence of the disease and how it is passed on to children at birth.
To assist the "at risk'' population through regular screening for the trait, and the provision of genetic counselling to those identified as having it.
To provide services to people of all ages with the condition.
*** The Foundation's range of services includes: Tutorials for pupils who have missed many hours of classroom study.
Job placement.
Friendly liaison between employers and their employees with the disease.
Ensuring that all school-aged students affected by the disease whose parents apply are assisted in every way possible to complete their education to their optimum level.
*** The Foundation finances are derived: Primarily from Foundation board members, the sickle cell support group, and friends/family of affected persons.
Special events held each September to heighten awareness and educate public about the disease.
