Tint laws to be relaxed
windows, The Royal Gazette can reveal.
It follows lobbying from garages who feel the 35 percent limit is unfair because tint strips contain variations that result in the Transport Control Department (TCD) failing drivers who thought their vehicles were within the rules.
Transport Minister Ewart Brown has ordered TCD to review the controversial regulations and will receive a report within the next ten days.
Dr. Brown told The Royal Gazette he expects the rules will be relaxed to allow drivers more tint.
But he warned he will also be holding installers accountable for making sure they do not fit illegal tints.
Robert Wheatley, the owner of Polish Masters, lobbied Dr. Brown for a flexibility of six percent because of the two percent variation in tint strips and windows, and a two percent degree of unreliability in TCD testing machines.
Dr. Brown said: "It is under review and I am expecting recommendations from TCD within the next ten days.
"I promised the tint lobby I would respond to their request by the middle of June and I believe we are going to be able to liberalise tint policy.
"It would allow a darker tint without threatening safety. The variation has to be worked out and it might not be as high as six percent, but I believe there is room for increasing the tint.'' Dr. Brown said he will have to consult with the Attorney General's Chambers to see whether amended legislation will need to be introduced in the House of Assembly.
