Top jazz player to perfomr for local audience
appearance by saxophonist Courtney Pine.
Acclaimed as one of Britain's leading jazz artists Pine's appearance at the Victualling Yard in Dockyard is a major coup for Jamfest Productions.
Apart from major success with his own recordings in Britain and the United States, he has guested for some of the world's top artists.
Stars that Pine has appeared with include Mick Jagger, Kate Bush and his characteristic sax sound is also featured on the recent Bob Marley single Iron Lion Zion.
Mr. Owen Martin, at Jamfest, said: "We thought it would be a once in a lifetime opportunity for jazz fans on the Island to see a prominent jazz musician.
"He is arriving this week, doing the show on Saturday and flying out on Sunday to perform another show in the UK.
"It is quite coup. He is not only popular in the UK and Europe, but he has made the Top 40 in the US. His concerts are selling out in the US.'' Pine is seen as one of the leading lights in Britain's jazz scene, despite his forays into rock music.
British jazz is mainly the domain of white musicians, with the majority of black artists turning to reggae, funk and soul.
Releases so far include his 1986 debut Journey to the Urge Within and Destiny's Song, which cracked the American jazz charts.
His latest album To the Eyes Of Creation mixes jazz, African, Indian and West Indian influences. Half the songs are his own compositions and included is an interpretation of Bob Marley's Redemption Song.
To The Eyes Of Creation is dedicated to his daughter, Cleopatra, who died while he was on tour. He questioned at first whether he could continue to work but then dedicated the album to her memory.
The concert begins at 9 p.m. on Saturday, and local band Studio 6 are supporting. Tickets are available from the 27th Century Boutique and Sound Advice.
