Upset at `no-show taxi'

Airport on a moped yesterday when a prearranged taxi failed to show up at her residence.

And her husband, Steve Massey contacted The Royal Gazette shortly afterward from his home at Bleak Farm Close in Devonshire to complain bitterly about the entire experience.

"I am a bit peeved off. I don't want this to happen to anyone else.

"My wife booked a taxi early in the morning to take three people to the airport at 11.30. She told them it was for the Airport and gave our phone number to the lady on the phone as well. It never turned up.

"At 11.45 one turned up and the driver said `Oh, you want to go to the Airport. I can't take you. I will call and get you another one'.

"By noon a taxi had still not shown up so we called Radio Cabs again and told the lady no one had shown up. She seemed shocked and said `that's unusual'.

"She promised a taxi would be here in five minutes but by 12.15 it had not arrived. They couldn't even tell us that they didn't have a taxi.

Mr. Massey explained his father's and stepmother's flight was leaving at 1 p.m. for New York.

"It was too late to call anyone else. We had to drive my father and his lady friend plus their three pieces of luggage to the Airport on our bikes. It was not the easiest thing to do.

"It's a bit annoying. My wife is five and a half months pregnant and should not be riding. She nearly had an accident. My stepmother was in tears.'' Debbie Massey said the incident ruined the end of the holiday for her in-laws.

She added that she had not been riding her bike since becoming pregnant but there was nothing else to do in this case.

What was more unnerving, she continued, was that a truck pulled out in front of her while riding to the Airport and then she had to drive in the rain on the way home.

Radio Cabs president Oliver Caisey said he was sorry about what had happened but explained that he could not control when drivers were on the roads.

"If there is a real rush on, sometimes there are not enough cars on the road to handle the jobs. All of the drivers are independent.'' He said people should make a pre-arranged booking for a cab the day before they needed it to make sure one was laid on for them.
