Workshops on ancient techniques
World' -- large ceramic vessels and wood firing techniques with Svend Bayer.
Bermuda will be the final country Mr. Bayer visits on his tour of the US and Canada. He is an internationally renowned potter who works out of his studio at Duckpool Cottage in Devon, England.
The workshop will be held on Saturday June 6 and Sunday June 7 at Jon Northcott's studio at Somersall Road, Smith's and will run from 10 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.
For almost 30 years Mr. Bayer has been performing miracles with the very basics of life, clay, water and fire. Skills originally learned from Michael Cardew have developed and refined into a unique style.
His pots have moved towards the unrefined sophistication of Japanese yakeshime ware.
Mr. Bayer works big, using a combination of throwing and coiling to produce vessels which have a commanding and majestic presence. They are then fired in one of his massive wood-fired tube kilns designed to hold approximately 3.5 tons of pots.
This promises to be a fascinating weekend for anyone remotely interested in pottery and, as spaces are limited, you should telephone to book your place at 234-2809. The cost of the workshops are $100 member $120 non-member. Cheques may be made payable to The Bermuda Arts Centre at Dockyard.
