American defends NBC Olympic coverage
coverage should recognise that NBC is simply an American network responding to its national audience, a US Naval Air Station resident said yesterday.
"I don't know why people are complaining that NBC is focussing mainly on American athletes,'' Mrs. Barbara Johnson said.
"It's an American station and we want to see our own people just as Bermudians want to see their own people. I would suggest that Bermuda could send its own television cameras and staff to Barcelona.'' Mrs. Johnson was answering widespread criticism voiced in The Royal Gazette yesterday by people upset with the strong American slant to NBC's coverage.
They were also angry that the the Bermuda Broadcasting Corporation's exclusive contract with NBC led to the blocking out of two Cablevision channels with extensive alternative Games coverage.
Yesterday, Mrs. Johnson said local viewers would find the same national slants if they were watching coverage of the Games by French or German networks.
"I'm sure the French and the Germans are focussing on their own people,'' she said. "It's only common sense.''
