Be the employee you would hire if you were the boss
Today's topic is about careers. This week the ACE Foundation is having a Careers Fair. The problem I have with this is that traditionally, many young people only come to these events looking for free stuff; with little to no interest in really obtaining information about career choices, advice on what they should study or where the jobs are today, tomorrow and into the future.
This must stop. Young people especially should use their youth as an advantage and get a head start on the road to success in life by taking full advantage of these types of opportunities. More on this after the top 20.
Making the big jump to #1 is Dynamite by Taio Cruz. Up to # 2 is I Like It by Enrique Iglesias featuring Pitbull. Tumbling to #3 its I Love The Way You Lie by Eminem featuring Rihanna. Up to #4 is Ride by Ciara featuring Ludacris. Falling to #5 is Rockstar 10, another hit by Rihanna.
Improving to #6, it's Hello, Good Morning by Diddy. Crossing paths are Teenage Dream by Katy Perry, a former essential new track at #7, and her California Gurls, featuring Snoop Dogg, which is down to #8.
Soaring to #9 is last week's must have new song, Just The Way You Are by Bruno Mars. Up to #10 is DJ Got Us Falling In Love by Usher featuring Pitbull. Up to # 11 is Deuces, by Chris Brown featuring Tyga and Kevin McCall. Falling to #12 is Find Your Love by Drake, one of the most popular artists these days.
Tumbling to #13 is Palance by JW and Blaze, a popular soca track this year. In fact, in Trinidad, they refer to Palancing as something that people do at a fete (party). They used to say "liming" but these days its "palancing"!
Improving to #14 is Only Girl In The World by Rihanna. Up to #15 is Just A Dream by Nelly. Slipping to #16 is OMG by Usher featuring Will.i.am; a very popular and catchy track that has had a good run in the charts.
Improving to # 17 is this week's essential new track, The Only Girl In The World by Rihanna, which pretty much sums her up at the moment. Jumping to #18 is Bottoms Up by Trey Songz featuring Nicki Minaj. Slipping to #19 is L'il Freak by Usher featuring Nicki Minaj. Down to #20 is Nothing On You by BoB featuring Bruno Mars
Now back to this week's word – career choices. Whilst I mentioned young people, career fairs really are for anyone who is interested in career advice.
It doesn't matter if you are in middle school, high school, college, unemployed or employed but looking for a better job. Use these events to jump-start your career.
Don't just go in there looking for free popcorn, candy or giveaways. You should actually speak to people, ask questions, take notes, network, meet potential employers and, more importantly, follow up on all of this later on.
Bermuda is in the throes of a deep recession. While more people are finally realising this, many are still in denial. Restaurants are closing left, right and centre. People are being laid off at an alarming rate.
Now is the time to get real and protect your job – if you have one. If you don't have a job, it's time to get out there and seriously look for work. Don't be too caught up on pay.
Just having a job, any job, these days is better than having no job. People must have some sort of money coming in to sustain themselves and their families.
It is much easier to find a job if you have a job, in strong economies. This must therefore also be true during economic downturns.
So today is the last day of the Career Fair. I invite anyone who is looking for career advice or career enhancement to get there and obtain as much information as possible.
Students should be asking the exhibitors questions like where the jobs are likely to be in the future and where do we have the greatest number of work permit holders?
The number of work permits is a strong indicator of where jobs are. This information will be provided at the career fair.
Unemployed persons should be asking where the jobs are now. Those who were recently laid off should use the opportunity to reinvent themselves, retrain and prepare for possible career changes, especially if the signs are that there is no work in their previous profession/industry and that the situation is not likely to change in the near future.
So good luck to all in your career management. Finding Bermudians jobs should relieve some of the stress in the country that we are presently experiencing.
But when people get jobs, they must be model employees.
People must come to work on time, give an honest day's work in return for an honest day's pay, they must not abuse sick leave and other benefits policies, they must be good team players, they must have positive attitudes, they must not start from the space of looking for what they can get out of the job but ask what they can do for the job.
Employees should try to be the kind of employee that they would want to hire if they were the business owner and it was their money on the line.
Fail to do this, and you will be the last to be hired and the first to be laid off. Peace … DJLT.
