BNG panel discussion to examine the power of art
The Bermuda National Gallery will be the scene of a special panel discussion tomorrow evening, the topic of which is 'Art as an Agent of Change'.
Presented by Dr. Christina Storey, with Lisa Howie as moderator, panellists will be Biennial artists Katherine Harriott and John Gardner, as well as social justice representatives Peter Carey of the Family Centre and social activist LeYoni Junos.
The thrust of the evening will be the exploration of the power of art: its ability to inspire discussion of social issues and to move audiences to activism.
The event will begin with Dr. Storey providing an historical reference of how artists have used their art, in terms of subject matter and/or form, as a vehicle for social change from the Renaissance to today.
This art may involve literal messages or ones more symbolic and subtle. The presentation will include a 30-minute slide show establishing art, and its layers of meaning, as the focus for the discussion.
Then the Biennial artists will spend ten minutes each describing their work and the political messages intended or addressed by their artwork.
This will include what inspired them to create their piece, as well as some mention of their artistic process.
Audience participation is an important component for the success of this event, so the public is invited to bring its ideas and questions.
The 6 p.m. panel discussion will last for 90 minutes and be preceded by a reception at 5.30 p.m.
Admission is free and all are welcome. For further information telephone 295-9428.
