Cooking classes to create Mexican delights
For those who are not into the Cinco de Mayo party, but who love Mexican cuisine, then a cooking class might be in order.
Deborah Smith-Joell, of Deborah's Gourmet Kitchen, will be turning out Mexican favourites over the coming weekends.
But with the celebration in mind, she will also introduce her students on how to make some of Mexico's finest drinks.
Mrs. Smith-Joell explained that Cinco de Mayo is celebrated annually with fiestas, dancing, decorations and lots of food.
"Women dress in brightly coloured dresses, and men wear authentic western clothing to commemorate the holiday," she explained.
"Cinco de Mayo is truly a fiesta grande in Puebla and many other Mexican states celebrate it as well."
On the flavours of Cinco De Mayo, she said people enjoy the likes of many traditional Mexican foods such as Tamales, Guacamole or chips and salsa.
"Mexican alcoholic beverages are also enjoyed on Cinco de Mayo including delicious and refreshing Lime Margaritas or hearty and flavourful Micheladas.
"Come experience the tastes, music and drinks of Cinco de Mayo, as we will have Mexican Martinis, the glass might fool you, but the taste won't, Ceviche, which is raw fish is cooked by limejuice. Taste before you turn your nose up."
She added: "We are also making Three Cheese Chicken Enchiladas and this is one you'll want to freeze and have over and over again, Spicy Pan-Fried Squash, which makes an excellent taco filler for vegetarians, Mexican Fideo, which is essentially a Mexican pasta. It is great for a side dish or a light meal.
"Lastly, we'll be making Empanadas and I can tell you that you'll want to make extra of these if you want some for later!"
Students are advised to bring take away containers for leftovers.
Classes are $85. Visit www.deborahsgourmetkitchen.com for more information or to register. Class spaces are limited.
