Debut for Canadian classical musicians

Canda's finest: The all-female ensemble, Angele Dubeau and La Pieta, make their debut at City Hall this evening in the first of two Bermuda Festival performances.

Tonight's Bermuda Festival curtain goes up on the Bermuda debut of Canadian classical musicians Angèle Dubeau and La Pieta.

Violinist, recording artist and television personality Miss Dubeau is one of Canada's most prominent artists, and the winner of several international competitions.

She has performed in prestigious concert halls in more than 25 countries, and her numerous recordings have not only been critically acclaimed, but she is also one of the few Canadian classical music soloists to have two certified gold records for 50,000 albums sold in one year.

Her outstanding talent has been honoured and recognised three times, including the Order of Canada, and another for her exceptional contributions to classical music. She plays a Stradivarius violin.

With the creation of her nine-strong string ensemble, La Pieta, in 1997, Miss Dubeau brought together some of Canada's finest female musicians. Under her direction, it has earned an enviable reputation from its many recordings and live performances. Its first seven CDs, released on the Analekta label, were all best sellers in their categories in Canada.

Hailed by Sam Diagacomo of Coming Civic Music in New York as "absolutely stunning ...world class does not adequately describe their abilities...everything was brilliant, just brilliant", there is no doubt that Angèle Dubeau and La Pieta will thrill Festival audiences with their artistry, both tonight and tomorrow night, at City Hall theatre.

Curtain time is 8 p.m. For further information/tickets visit www.bermudafestival.org
