Dramatic, compelling and powerful pieces to test actresses' mettle

Plays ranging in content from drama to comedy will showcase tonight during the Success Series' final curtain call, Acting for Success. KDB Entertainment's Kevin Bean spoke to The Royal Gazette about a few of the plays that would decide the winner of the Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theater scholarship. "They plays are written for off-Broadway or playhouses and they are really intense," he said.

"I don't label them as skits, they are full-featured plays, because they truly are power pieces."

One of the plays is called 'Aspiring Francine'; another 'Firing Francine'.

"They are from the same book and they are both ridiculously funny," Mr. Bean explained. "'Firing Francine' is about a boss and her employee who she would like to fire, but she can't because she is a good worker."

A third play, 'Rush to Judgement', was written in 1998 by Nancy Hanna.

"It is an incredibly dramatic piece," said Mr. Bean, who completed the two-year course at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theater. "It's got to do with a hurricane that is coming or on its way and as a result you get to see the mother and daughter preparing for the great big storm. The daughter is worried about the physical storm coming, while the mother is simultaneously going through a mental hurricane.

"It is very dramatic and it is definitely powerful. All of the plays are very compelling even the comedy has a story behind it."

There will be eight pieces in all and all the actresses will take part in six two-person pieces as well as two pieces featuring three characters.

Concluded Mr. Bean: "I'm very excited about it and I have seen tremendous growth in the actresses in the past three weeks."
