Michael Jackson, Madonna and Boy George will be in Bermuda tonight to raise money for a lacrosse programme for schoolchildren.

That is perhaps not strictly true — but some people will be dressing up like them at the BAA gym, which is arguably the next best thing.

Bermuda Lacrosse Association has organised the 80s prom party in an effort to generate funds to develop its after-schools project, which it is hoping to widen out across the Island as the sport grows in popularity.

Bermuda's own Kennel Boys will be performing along with Paul Sofianos, who will be playing all the classic songs from the dubious era.

A few months ago, only one player was on the Bermuda Lacrosse Youth Programme, but now students from Prospect Primary, Northlands Primary, Berkeley Institute, Somersfield Academy, Warwick Academy and Saltus all play.

But BLA is now trying to get more schools on board and cash raised tomorrow night will go towards buying equipment.

BLA president Michael Totman said: "Building a programme from scratch isn't easy especially when no local sports stores carry the necessary equipment due to little previous demand for the sport.

"There should be no reason to deny an interested young athlete from playing so we're hoping to offset the costs through our event."

Mr. Totman said the goal is to introduce young athletes to the fastest growing sport at the youth, high school, and collegiate level.

"Millions of dollars are given out every year in lacrosse scholarships," he said. "This is a wide open opportunity for Bermudian athletes to capitalise on. Our objective now is to introduce top athletes to the game before they leave for overseas schools and give them a foundation to build on once there."

The 80s Prom Party, at the BAA gym on Woodlands Ave, runs from 8 p.m. until 1 a.m. Tickets are $50 and can be bought at All Wrapped Up in the Washington Mall, on www.bermudalacrosse.com or via BLA members.
