Green leadership at CedarBridge

Step up! Go green!: CedarBridge Academy National Honour Society led the student body in environmental stewardship while celebrating student leadership.

CedarBridge Academy has celebrated National Student Leadership. The theme was Step Up! Go Green! and the CedarBridge Academy National Honor Society (CBA NHS) hosted events for the student body.

There was an obstacle race in the North Courtyard during one lunch period. Students had to hoola-hoop five times, run and pick up blowing trash and place it in the recycling bag, then jump rope to the bucket which held a green bobbing apple. Finally, the students had to retrieve the apple from the water with his or her mouth and run and place it in the trash can. The winners won fabulous prizes.

The following day the school had a special assembly and 19 students were recognised for their leadership skills in the classroom and in the school. The students were nominated by their teachers to receive the awards.

The students recognised were Shallette Spencer, Monique Gobern, Courtney Simons, Ta-Shanae Trott, Andrew Almeida, Lavonna Thomas, Brandi Bassett, Danielle Richards, Shane Hodgson, Lyndell Davis, Angele Smith, Princine Bailey, Sarafina Durrant, Khaivon Brown, Princeton Bailey, Aly Zweiner, Andrew Almeida, Kavonne OíMarra, and Jahnae Harvey.

Midweek a Go Green! Wear Green! grub day was held. Students were allowed to wear green grub clothes to school. To participate in the grub day students had to bring three empty water bottles or three empty soda cans. A total of 264 students and adults participated in this event. The cans were taken to the Recycling Plant at the Government Quarry in Hamilton Parish, and the plastic bottles to the Tynes Bay solid waste treatment plant.

The week-long series of events culminated with a leadership conference for all CBA NHS members. The conference was planned by the 11 CBA NHS delegates who had attend the 2009 LEAD Conference in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Students had an opportunity to participate in team building and leadership workshops.

In the afternoon a member of GreenRock addressed the group, giving them ideas for future environmental leadership.
