I'm a snitch, brah, and make no apologies
It's not quite summer yet and it seems like we've really had a long winter! Even though we're into May, it's still kinda cool in the mornings and evenings. Everybody knows that Bermuda has lost its way. We're in a downward spiral of moral bankruptcy from which I'm not seeing a departure any time soon. More on this after the top 20.
Holding at #1 is Tik Tok by Ke$ha. This one is cute and poppy/clubby. Immovable at #2 is Sexy Chick by David Guetta featuring Akon. This track makes me miss being a DJ. In the #3 spot is Hard by Rihanna.
Up at #4 is Everything To Me by Monica, a former essential new tune. Rude Boy by Rihanna advances to #5, giving the Bajan bombshell two songs in the top five.
Tumbling to #6 is On To The Next One by Jay Z and Swizz Beats. Falling to #7 it's Bedrock by Young Money featuring Lloyd.
Improving to #8 is Hey Daddy, (Daddy's Home) by Usher featuring Plies. Slipping to #9 is Snoop Dogg's hip hop Anthem I Wanna Rock. On the way down at #10 is Why Don't You Love Me by Beyonce. In the #11 spot is Say Something by Timbaland featuring Drake, a former essential new jam.
On the way up at #12 is Neighbours Know My Name by Trey Songz. Slipping to #13 is How Low by Ludacris.
Up two spots to #14 is another former essential new tune – My Chick Bad by Ludacris featuring Nicki Minaj. Falling to #15 is Say Aah by Trey Songz featuring Fabolous.
Last week's essential new tune, Over, by Drake, improves to #16. Up to #17 is Un-Thinkable (I'm Ready) by Alicia Keys. Jumping to #18 is Nothin' On You by B.o.B. featuring Bruno Mars.
Slipping to #19 is It Kills Me by Melanie Fiona, a sweet ballad. Tumbling to #20 is Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart by the lovely Alicia Keys. She consistently puts out the hits.
Now back to this week's word – how we lost our way. We have had more shootings and murders in the first four months of 2010 than ever before, with only an increase in crime and shooting as the likely outcome. What next?
I am concerned that our young people do not value life. It's the same old story as in the US, from which we learnt this ignorant Gangsta life – black on black violence and crimes. Nobody wants to come out and say this but you don't see young white byes shooting each other! Its always the silly, ignorant blacks (I can say that because I'm black too) who are shooting and killing each other. Some of the rival gangs feature cousins, distant cousins, neighbours, people who were at one time friends! What gives?
This has gotten progressively worse and I must associate myself with the Police Commissioner's remarks from last week, wherein he said that one of the problems in Bermuda is that too many people, including mothers, aunties, uncles, and yes even grandparents nowadays; are benefiting from and living comfortable lifestyles from the proceeds of their sons, nephews and grandsons' illegal activities. They don't want to say anything about it, for fear of losing their standard of living, the things that the crime provides.
We are a country in love with things, not in love with our people. Very sad but very true. If a person will take another's life without even blinking an eye, that individual cannot value life and does not love people.
Any person that could gun down a man in front of his children has no scruples.
The way out of this is for the relatives and people who know about persons' illegal activity to slip a word to the authorities. Bermuda, stop being afraid of these menaces to our society. They say "Don't Snitch".
Oh yeah? Well I'm a SNITCH brah. If I see you selling drugs that only ruin lives, I'm going to report it immediately. If I've seen a person engaging in any form of illegal activity the Police will know about it soon after I do. We have to assist the Police. We have to help them to help us. Otherwise it will not get better but only will get worse.
It is my hope and my prayer that one day peace will soon abide in this land … DJLT.
