Jazz band to close out Fringe Festival

Tonight marks the final presentation of the Bermuda Festival's 2009 Fringe Festival, 'Dahn de Hill to Daylesford', when pianist Tony Bari, electric bassist Stan Gilbert, drummer Ronnie Lopes and vocalist Gita Blakeney-Saltus combine their artistry for a special evening of jazz by the Tony Bari Trio, entitled 'T, G & Friends'. Mr. Bari is a professional pianist who also performs as a soloist with his smooth, sophisticated jazz trio. Together with Mrs. Blakeney-Saltus they are a familiar sight at venues around the Island.

Mr. Gilbert is one of the Island's top musicians who has been playing professionally for the past 35 years.

Self-taught, his career began with the Milt Robinson Trio at the Hamilton Princess, and he has played with most of Bermuda's professional musicians and singers, including Lance Hayward, Ghandi Burgess, Tootsie Bean, Gene and Pinky Steede, the late Hubert Smith and the late Violetta Carmichael.

The bassist has also played at most of Bermuda's Music Festivals, and with the Department of Tourism as an ambassador in many major US cities.

Drummer Ronnie Lopes' professional career began at the age of 18. In his early 20s he formed the group Paradise, which became the house band at the Elbow Beach Hotel.

He went on to play with The Tom Ray Trio in Hubert Smith's 'Greg Thompson Bermuda Songbook'. He has also freelanced for local Broadway shows at City Hall, and opened for many stars in the Bermuda Jazz Festival.

Today, Mr. Lopes plays with the Tony Bari Trio, The Travellers, and The Tom Ray Band, for whom he is lead vocalist, percussionist and drummer.

Contralto Mrs. Blakeney-Saltus describes her 'raw stylised singing' as "a welcome departure from today's studio productions".

She pledges allegiance to a fusion of jazz and R&B about life and love. She draws from a variety of influences, which are reflected in her developed stage presence, vocal control and versatility. The vocalist has performed in several Bermuda Jazz Festivals, and her overseas engagements include the Four Seasons Hotel, Las Vegas; the Irving Plaza with the Clarke Eno Orchestra in New York City; and as part of the 2001 Smithsonian Folklore Festival in Washington, DC. Showtime is 9 p.m. For further information/tickets see the special Bermuda Festival calendar below or visit www.bermudafestival.org.
