Jazz concert sets the scene for Father's Day

Internationally renowned jazz organist Dr. Lonnie Smith is coming back to the island to headline a special pre-Father's Day jazz concert at the Ruth Seaton James Centre for the Performing Arts.

The concert, to be held on June 10, is being presented by Treble Clef Production. Local entertainment will be provided by Bermudians Dennis Fox and Friend, and Derrick (CJ) Symonds will be master of ceremonies.

During his last visit, Dr. Smith brought the house down with his dazzling style and artistry, and his next appearance promises to be no less dynamic.

A dominant talent and pace-setting proponent of the Hammond B3 organ, Dr.

Smith has been at the forefront of the jazz scene since 1969, and was named top organist by Downbeat magazine. After recording several albums with George Benson, he became a solo recording artist, and has more than 30 albums to his credit. His album, `Lenox and Seventh Avenue,' recorded in Paris, has become a classic jazz tour de force .

Dr. Smith will be joined special guest artist, tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander, plus a visiting drummer and guitarist.

Thirty-three year old Mr. Alexander is also a recording artist. His playing has been described as bringing "a sense of melodic focus and harmonic sophistication that belies his age and harks back to such aged-in-the-oak hard-top tenors of the fifties and sixties as George Coleman, Hank Mobley and Tina Brooks''.

The saxophonist studied at the University of Indiana and William Paterson College in New Jersey, and following his graduation in 1987 he moved to Chicago where his earliest gigs found him in the company of Hammond organ players. Eventually, the late organist Charles Earland took him on the road and helped launch his recording career.

In 1991, Mr. Alexander placed second to Joshua Redman in the Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition. In 1992 he moved to New York, where he made the first of many albums with the great Memphis pianist Harold Mabern.

Balcony tickets, which include a pre-concert cocktail reception with complimentary bar and hot and cold hors d'oeuvres, are $85.00. Orchestra tickets are $65, and for these patrons there will be a cash bar.

Doors open at 5 p.m., and show time is 7 p.m.

Tickets are available at the Music Box in Hamilton and St. George's, Advance Travel and the People's Pharmacy, or 291-JAZZ (5299).
