The artistic journey of two Bermudian artists has led them all the way to Dockyard.

Jonah Jones and Chris Marson are holding their fifth collaborative art show together on Sunday, focusing on the west end of the Island.

"The subject matter is somewhat of a departure from my usual Bermuda scenes, I guess, as Dockyard has a heavier more military/working feel to it than much of the rest of the Island, left over from its Royal Naval heritage," said Mr. Jones. "Having said that, I have gravitated towards the tug boats and water views.

"One of the reasons I so enjoy working collaboratively with Chris is he is also happy to take on and tackle the grittier landscapes and subjects of life here."

Mr. Jones said it was easy for an artist to fall into the trap of revisiting cute subjects that had a mass appeal and to use a colour pallette or tonal key that would more easily seduce a client.

"Chris, though, like myself, is on an artistic journey that requires us to step away from the path of broad appeal and strive for the long-term goal of artistic excellence that may not always be clear to the casual observer," said Mr. Jones. "We both sometimes discard a morning's effort, knowing that it wasn't good enough, but happy that we learned something anyway."

A good many paintings in the exhibition were executed on location, with several others worked on in the studio.

"The paintings were completed over a period of around 12 months and are a culmination of what I would call a fairly deep investigation of the area," said Mr. Jones. "I have additionally used a couple of pieces of older reference to paint scenes that I remember, but are no longer there."

The show opens at the Bermuda Arts Centre at Dockyard at 5.30 p.m. on Sunday, all are welcome.
