Mosaics take artist to a timeless place

Debut mosaic artist Cathyann Hansey will open her first solo show this evening at the Bermuda Society of Arts.

Debut mosaic artist Cathyann Hansey began on her artistic journey in 2001 when she took a class in stained glass and loved it.

Since then she has been experimenting with mosaics around the house. "I've created a lot of mosaic art using a variety of colours, styles, and textures of tiles," she said. "My work has developed and my passion has grown I now see this as my calling."

Her first show,'"Mosaic All The Way' opens at the Bermuda Society of Arts' Studio D tonight.

She works throughout the night and into the small hours of the morning placing one Tessera tile at a time. "When I am creating, I lose all sense of time.

"I think it's important not to rush, but rather to work with patience, so that I maintain that initial feeling of anxious excitement that inspires each new piece.

"My goal is that everyone who views my work is able to appreciate its beauty, as well as the emotion that inspired it."

Ms Hansey's love of the art form has led her to make plans to attend the Institute of Mosaic Art in Oakland, California, in the fall. When asked what it was that she particularly enjoyed about the art form, she said: "As one of my favourite artists Laurel Skye put it, 'it's just fascinating, the concept of time standing still, that time is no longer linear, and that there's a time/space reality, because when you're doing mosaic tiling you move into that magical intersection where time and timelessness intersect'.

"In that moment you forget that you're hungry, you forget to use the bathroom, and it's that magical place where everybody wants to be when they forget about time. Mosaics take me there, just like a painter creates an image one stroke at a time, I create a mosaic one Tessera tile at a time."
