Party will benefit blind college students

Jamming: Visually impaired friends Rebecca Keir, 19, Chris Norman, 20, Matthew Johnson, 20, and Rachael Nafzger who all learned how to play instruments in the same high school and are gearing up to play at the upcoming party for the Bermuda Society for the Blind at BIU Union Street, Hamilton tonight at 6 p.m. They play a combination of soft rock, folk and blues. Admission is free, and the purpose of the party is to raise awareness for the visually impaired.

The Bermuda Society for the Blind is having a party tonight with music being provided by two Bermudians who are blind, Matthew Johnson who is at Exeter University in the UK and Kristina Bean who is studying at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada.

Mr. Johnson said: "I'm looking forward to it, we (he and his friends) spent the whole morning rehearsing. "We'll be playing of acoustics, soft rock, things like that. I personally will vary from true classical to rock."

Of course its not always simple for Mr. Johnson given his blindness. "You do have to be careful," he explained. "You have to make sure your facing the mic, facing the audience, but after you've played one or two sets, then your fine.

"I did attend a college where the focus was mostly academic, but at the same time we learned a bit of cooking, a bit of residential things, we learned ways to get around objects."

Mr. Johnson is hoping to go into Law when he finishes at Exeter University. In addition to playing the guitar, he also speaks French, Spanish, German, and Kavalan.

The party is to be at the Bermuda Industrial Union building on the Fourth Floor from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The party will include dinner, musical entertainment, socialising, and an update regarding the Society.

Admission is free. Raffles will be sold and they will be accepting donations. Membership forms will be available for $5.
