Plea for ideas for Millennium celebration
to come forward with suggestions on how the Island can celebrate the year 2000.
And Jay Bluck has also defended his group's decision not to use any of the $1 million Millennium fund on party celebrations.
Speaking at yesterday's Hamilton Rotary Club luncheon, Mr. Bluck said: "We still want to hear from the public about projects that they are doing because there are both funds and expertise available to help.
"We would ask that the requests and suggestions be made in writing to the committee and sent to us at Cultural Affairs, The Gate House, 81 Court Street, Hamilton.'' Mr. Bluck said the committee was responsibile for recommending to Government suitable events and projects to celebrate the Millennium.
"The Government subsequently passed the Millennium Fund Act establishing the Millennium fund of $1 million.
"The committee, which encompasses members from all sectors of the community, has met monthly since its inception and is meeting twice monthly at this time because the scope of work is expanding as the Millennium approaches.
"The committee, at its initial meeting, decided that the funds provided by Government were not to be used to finance parties, that the funds were to be used to provide projects which would have long term beneficial effects on the entire community.''
